Report: Made the 450 mi round trip again [from NY state Finger lakes region]to fish for fluke. Took my two teenage sons and towed my Aquasport down... Bay was rough dirty and nasty early, so we headed through the raging rip to fish along sandy hook beach front. Some birds, shorts and skates... Not what we hoped for! Headed to Sea Bright rough bottom and this was the right move. We got 6 nice keeper flatties and 5 keeper Seabass along with dozens of FAT "shorts" short seabass and plenty of skate balls! Lots of action till noon when we headed up close to Sandy Hook again and caught many shorts.. many of them VERY close to keeper size. The bay looks finished for awhile IMHO. All the headboats are fishing the rocks and humps in 50 ft + The fluke are spread all along the beach souith of the Hook with the larger fish in deep water. I'm not an expert but I think they are pouring out of the bay fast.. I may be wrong, but thats how it looks. Our fish hit jigs with strip bait, freshwater chubs [dead]we caught and used as an experiment, killies, and especially squid HEADS!!. The killies we purchased at a store that shall remain nameless were a DISGRACE!!!.. TEENIE TINY little pitiful things that were even too small for freshwater perch/crappie fishing... I seldom buy killies anymore for this reason. We were using two or three on a hook at times. Highlight of the day was a double header of keepers one 20' one 18' my 14b year old son Jake caught on a white jig w red twister/feather teaser rig tipped with globs of killies and squid heads.. a real mess but he caught 5 of the six keeper fluke so he's a better man than his old man.. A nice day out there for the guys who rode out of the bay and down the beach. Looks good for sept!! bob
