Report:
I pulled up to Sandy Point State Park at 6 AM on 8/29/03. It had just started to rain…hard. Not wasting any time, I started checking the current charts that I had printed out the night before, of the Middle Chesapeake Bay, against the locations and times I had in my log book. This is an important step to maximizing time in waters with moving current.

Just prior to 7 AM the rain had slowed down enough for me to launch my boat without raingear. When I was headed back down the dock to park my truck, a couple of eager anglers approached me with tackle in hand. John and Jim were to be my clients today and were as ready as I was to get on some fish.

We fished structures both north and south of the Bay Bridges such as points, inflows, concrete pilings, deep drop-offs, shoals and sandbars. The fish caught during this trip were striped bass, bluefish, white perch and Spanish mackerel. The water temperature was 80.3 degrees and the clarity was good.

Most Productive Lure: Hopkins, Shorty, 2 ounce, in silver fished with a single hook

Most Productive Technique: Jig & Stop-Vertically (Short Stroking) Cast the lure. Let it drop to the desired depth…this trip it was the bottom, then lift your rod tip from 9 o’clock to 10 o’clock pulling the lure up rather than lifting it with a quick jerk. Follow the lure back down with a tight line while taking up any slack line. Repeat this again and again, until you catch a fish or move to the next drift. The fish will take the lure on the fall. This is a very productive technique to use when the fish are holding tight to the bottom.

Special Thanks: John and your guest, Jim, for selecting me to guide you on the Chesapeake Bay.

Unusual Catch:

The mackerel hit a jigging spoon in 14’ of water. Nice catch Jim.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Tom Hughes
