  after a horrible year in my neck of the woods even mayby the worst in my 27 years of fishing the west haven new haven milford areas october always pays off with somthing. the tremendous run of hickory shad in the area has provided great big fat striper bass fishing. hickory shad are all over the place and easy to catch invading what else? massive peunut bunker. shad everywhere like i never seen around here before. i have invested 2 dozen or more nights and even some afternoons livelining and chunking hickory shad the past few weeks and have caught mayby more big bass in a 3 week period than any time in memory. nothing small! all big fat boys up to 35+lbs a dime a dozen. just catch a hickory and liveline. its that easy cause there in thick. did catch 2 blues all in all in the 6lb range on some of the chunked shad but thats a whole diiferent story. for this time of the year its sad to see the bluefishing stink so bad as it stunk all season, i saw a few small blitzes of small blues along the beaches here and there this fall but this year was the worst in my memory. im not sure the 10 fish per day law is working. snapper fishing was horrible and i never saw 1 adult bunker all year. thats a first. another year another massive baby bunker hatch. somthing is seriously out of whack and i know what it is. the trend seems to be when you do find adult bunker their huge bunker only, nothing in between. just cause there is tuns of baby bunkers doesnt mean the stock is healthy cause it doesnt take many adult bunker to lay billions of eggs. the bottime line is the bunker industry and the spotter planes have thrown everything out of whack. anyone who thats been fishing long enough knows whenever you find bunker you always find the bluefish and weakfish mixed in and i know the industry lies bigtime about the bycatch and their grinding up the blues and weakfish right along with the bunkers and they dont care. i only hope somthing is done someday cause even good striper fishing cant compare to the fall bluefish runs of the 70s 80s and the early 90s with fall weakfish in the teens feeding underneith thick schools of bunker. notice the bluefish contest winners get smaller and smaller in wieght every season. notice fall runs of weakfish gone. no more timed runs. no more slammer sized blues to be found.no more adult bunker in rhode island, mass, or maine. all these baby bunker every year only to never return as adults. its really sad. its nice to see hickory shad saving this year at the last minute. fellow fisherman at my club are doing good with black fish and porgies. tight lines to all!!!!!
