FISH CALL NEWS

Welcome all! Wow!, February's weather sure was nasty, but we still managed to sneak in a few nice days as well as some good fishing even on the bad ones! The water temp was below 50° for the entire month so the bite was not aggressive, but still there. Ron Heames came and fished for two very cold days with me. We good 5 slooooow reds to eat the first day and got 13 nice ones the second day! Then on the Valentine's weekend, I had to cancel several trips due to weather, but Larry and his two boys braved the elements. This may have been one of the windiest days of February, but the fish ate cut bait well. They released 15 real nice reds! The Gerald's Tires boys braved the elements a few days later and also scored BIG. They caught and released 13 real nice reds including a few over 10 pounds! Dave MCCauley made it down for a fishing next. He also did real good releasing 10 nice reds. The weekend of the 21st was also very windy, but with sunny skies! On Saturday, my clients released 6 reds including an 11 pounder. The next day, I took Roy Walker who had been practicing with the fly rod, but had never caught a saltwater fish on fly. He said, he did not care how windy it was, he was going to cast the fly at them. Well, the "Gold Flashy" fly worked like a charm. Roy landed 8 out of 13 redfish on the fly!! Great job! The next day, a buddy and i went back to the same fish and they jumped all over that same fly again. We landed 4 in about an hour before the clouds came in. This past Saturday will go down on record as my first skunking of the year> Yes, it happens to everyone. This time Rob Sasser and buddies were the unlucky recipients. They had a fantastic day last time we went out. I actually did two trips that day, and Randy Haynes and partner did pretty good catching 8 nice reds. On the last day of the month, local Billy Camp and boys fished with me. Finally, it was a beautiful February day, and the fish bit well. They caught and released 10 reds including a few around 10 pounds! So even though we had to cancel several trips, it was a decent month for fishing. We averaged 8.8 redfish per trip in February. Not quite as good as January and not nearly as good as past Februarys, but still respectable considering the weather. We are only a few days into March, but the average high has been in the mid to upper 70s!!! The fish are going to eat like CRAZY when the water warms up a few more degrees. Look for big numbers of fish in the next few weeks! I am putting together a week long trip to the Turneffe Flats Lodge in Belize sometime in late May of this year. This is a great area for catching bonefish, permit, and tarpon on the fly! They also have spinning rods. Check out their website: http://www.tflats.com I need 3 other anglers to go with me. It will be two anglers per room and per boat. If I can not get it together this year, then I am going to plan a trip there in Jan or Feb 2005. If you have any interested, please contact me ASAP. I also still have the boat for sale and about half of March available for charters so give me a ring........Tight Lines!

Cheers, Capt. J.R. Waits, Fish Call Charters http://www.fishcall.com
