Report: Went out today with my friend Paul on his boat OZMAN. We tried to get out JB inlet but the swells were HUGE! After being beaten up and not getting too far we took the longer way West to East Rockaway Inlet and found it much calmer there. We headed back East and ended up in 35-40 feet of water off Atlantic Beach by the Round House. We immediately were into fluke. Drift was fast, needed much weight to hold and even then had to scope out a lot of line. Couldn't work a jig, too fast a drift. Squid and spearing combos were the ticket. A pink bucktail skirt seemed to have the edge over chartruese. That SW wind kicked up again around mid-morning and just got worse all day. Before the tide turned and it became wind against tide we ended up with 9 fluke, most in the 16-17" range and one 19" keeper. No blues were encountered, surprisingly. But we did have an encounter with a large pod of dolphins and a big splash taht could have been a whale or thresh shark (later we stopped at Capt. Andy's and were told a thresher had been seen earlier in the day around that spot).
Overall, tough fishing but still fun.
