Report:
BOSTON HARBOR & CAPE COD- Stripers & Blues

Just returned from my annual fly-fishing trip for Atlantic Salmon on the Hawke River in Labrador. Water level was perfect, as was the weather and the fresh run of salmon, covered with sea-lice. Catch and release limits were the rule every day. Mostly 4-6 pound grilse and some salmon to 15 pounds aggressively took hitched glitter Black bear hair green butts size 6, chartreuse-butt buck bugs size 4 and Magog Smelt size 2.

On my return, I found both Boston’s inner-harbor and outer-harbor striper fishing much improved. Erwin Brady and friend from Florence, MA annual fly and light-tackle trip to the harbor produced Erwin’s personal-best light-tackle striper. The 38”, 20-pound linesider slammed a Texas-rigged Bassin’ Assassin right beside the boat. Two other keepers in the 30” inch class took chartreuse Half & Halfs on the long rod in Boston’s outer-harbor.

On Friday both the JANET B and the B-FAST were after stripers in two different locales-Race Point and Boston Harbor, respectively. Kevin Concannon, from Hingham, MA and EMC, hosted the group trip to the Race jigging for Bass and Blues. Bass to 48” and good numbers of blues took the parachute jigs bounced in the sand on the edge of the drop-off. Meanwhile in Boston, long-time client Deano Romanow of Framingham, MA went to work with Epoxy-head herring patterns cast on 350 grain DepthCharge line. He accounted for about a dozen schoolies and two keepers at 32 and 30 inches from Boston’s inner-harbor before the feeding foray ended. Herring and silversides were the bait in evidence.

Dick Cook (Lowell, MA) used the T-3 Trident and Vortex reel effectively to land two keepers using chartreuse Half & Half’s in the early morning on Saturday. Both bass were taken close to the beach on the edge of a bar where the bass were lined up to ambush the baitfish on the running tide.
