Report: The very best thing about the trip was the fellowship I shared with the men on that boat. Many of them were "regulars". They all touched me in different ways and I made friends. It felt really good to fellowship with others who shared the same passion, so deeply. I learned alot, taught a few things too, laughed & smiled ALOT... I lost sleep because I was having such a great time. Now about the fishing...
The first day we trolled and brought up a bull dolphin, a big yellowfin and a NICE wahoo, said to be in the 60 pound range. I saw lots of small dolphin, but was unable to nab one. I never before, saw a dolphin in the water, except in magazines...and the mags. don't do them justice...it's like they have neon lights electricly turned on inside. We were in blue water and in the stream of things. The producer seemed to be sevenstrand Tunna clone feathers. Black and purple, and the green/orange, I don't remember what the wahoo was taken on, but the boat was actually comming to a stop when the Wahoo jumped on.
Later that day we did some 600 foot drops as the winds were picking up...and tile fishing was new for alot of people. Then we just anchored and chunked the rest of the night. The Tuna were taken on live squid, they wanted nothing to do with the butters. The squid weren't happy that night and were hard to catch, especially with the strong winds... but you needed one if you wanted a Tuna. There werent too many Tuna taken but they were a nice size. (Albacore and Yellowfin). I saw so much beauty in a live squid, because up until that night, the only squid I'd seen were dead ones and the difference is like night and day.
The next day I did great on the tiles, I used 4 pounds of weight for just 300 feet, but I had less line out and stayed on the bottom...instead of constantly paying line out to briefly bump the bottom. The tiles were on the small side- in 300 feet verses some MONSTERS I saw, which were taken in 600 feet, but the winds hadn't died yet and 300 feet was more comfortable. I also reeled up a double header of Pollock. That nights chunking, a few Tuna were taken, but they all had butterfish "chunks" in their stomach, and they were a bit on the smaller side than the bigger ones the night before.
There was a sunrise that got more awesome by the minute, and I got some good pictures. When the boat was turning back I felt a sadness, and longing for these same people, to get together again for a future trip. If that wasn't enough, when we got back to the dock, it wasn't a good time to drive through New York, so I went out on that boat again, for an evening, striper trip in the rain....am I the one hooked here??? The stripers were a pick, but every drift produced some, they were a good size, and the pool fish was NICE-one I would have loved to catch myself. The Viking Starship, and it's Captain and crew were Excellent in every way and I look forward to returning.
