Report:
My brother and I drove to Hyannis MA to cash in on the spring porgy run. Fished 06/15 & 06/16. The first day we fished on Captain Bob. The seas were choppy with North winds 25 + knots. Air temperature was only in low fiftys. Luckily, fishing was done just outside the inlet. Two slack tides plus wind made for poor fishing conditions. However, during the moving tides the fish cooperated. The yellow dyed clams with ultra claim scent that I brought with me outfished the squid baits provided by the boat. My brother and I were able to catch our limit of 60 porgies. The second day we fished on the Helen H. The weather was greatly improved but we had to battle the crowded boat conditions(about 95 people). The captain did a good job of keeping on the fish and stayed out an hour longer. We again managed to catch are limit of porgies. Most of the fish were over 3/4 lb with many between 1 - 3lbs. Best baits to use are clams and squid. You should use size #2 hooks and will need sinkers from 4-8oz. If you are planning a porgy trip to the Cape Cod area try to avoid fishing on weekends, during times of full or new moon phases and days with two periods of slack water. Also note that as of 2005 the minimum size for porgies is 10 1/2 inches with a maximum limit of 60 per person for 5/05 & 6/05. Effective 07/05 the limit per person drops to 25.
