Report: STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod Fishing & BOSTON HARBOR-Stripers 6/25/05
Offshore, both cod and haddock fishing east of Stellwagen Bank continue to be excellent due to the sub-normal water temperatures. Good numbers of haddock and market cod comprise most of most of the catch. Pool-winning whale cod in the 30 to 40 pound range have been a common the past two weeks. Inshore, more keeper bass are taking the offerings cast by light-tackle and fly fishers in Boston’s inner-harbor bays and the South Shore ledges.
On Wednesday, long time client and former Bergen County Angler’s President, Ed Ajamian and friend Roy from Atlantic Highland, NJ had a great day in Boston’s inner harbor. Roy, armed with the long-rod and Ed with light spinning gear enticed 30+ stripers to boat side on B-Fast’s BAY FLY with Capt. Tom at the helm. One of Tom’s white sea-ducer patterns was the best producer on the rod. One ounce jig-heads with a seven-inch rubber baits twitched down deep worked best for Ed on his pet spinning tackle. Before these expert Garden State anglers were done, seven keepers were brought to the net and released—36”, two 35”, 34”, two 33” and a 30”. I met Ed and Roy at Scituate’s Barker Tavern for the “Best Swordfish in the World” culminating a great day on the water.
Dick Cook and his eldest son Nick from Lowell, MA had an equally productive day Saturday on the B-FAST. Once again, few fish were showing on the surface on the outgoing tide, so we started casting to structure. The first three bass were 35, 32 and 34 inches—all taken down deep with 1oz jig-heads sweetened with Fin-S rubber bait or chartreuse Half & Half’s on 400 grain Orvis DepthCharge line on the fly rod. Stops at three other locations yielded more keepers than shorts—quality not quantity was the order of the day. Six keepers with the largest at 36 inches tallied the Cook boy’s personal best on fly and light-tackle stripers.
Offshore on Saturday, B-Fast’s JANET B and DECISIVE had a good day fishing skimmer clams for haddock and cod. Joe Angeloni and his son’s from Milltown, NJ were into the haddock early on the ebbing tide. The flood tide against the stiff SW breeze made tending bottom difficult for the NJ anglers. Nevertheless, good numbers of haddock and equal numbers of scrod and market cod filled the boxes. One 35 pound steaker and another 20 pound cod took top honors Capt. Bob’s group on the JANET B.
Joe’s trip was protracted due to a floating ghost-net which wrapped the wheel on the return trip to Green Harbor. A kindly tow from Capt. Scott on the DECISIVE and a congenial diver back at the dock cleared the wheel for Sunday’s trip.
