Water Temperature: 62 Water Clarity: . Seas: 1-3 Weather: Good day for us small boaters Fishing_for: Tuna Boat: Fish Gutz captain: Capt Dick
Report:
Fished the 20 fathom finger early. Trolled cedar for a while before first hit. Double header on big bluefish. Marked the spot and came back across and got another hook up. Thought it was a bluefish but it came up and was a 20 pound bluefin. Worked the area a while longer...picked up another bluefish. Headed the boat east thinking about a canyon trip and hooked up another bluefin. How are you supposed to release tuna? They fight like crazy to the very end then they bleed like everything and are all pooped out at the end of the fight. One bluefin per boat sucks especially when the purse sieners are wiping the ocean clean.
Anyway after that we picked up and made the long run to Poorman's canyon. Had the place all to ourselves. Kind of spooky being all alone in a 22 footer 60 miles out. Water temp was 63 and I thought we had made the run for nothing...about to call it quits when I spotted a school of yellowfin busting the top. Made three passes and finally had a double hook up. Landed both. Small 20 pounders but it made the run worth while. Picked up and headed in. A mile or so inside the canyon we saw the biggest collection of porpoises I've ever seen. Must have been hundreds...of all types. Great show.
