Report:
We had a really late start due to dropping off kids at school. Left Dauphin Island's Billy Goat Hole around 9:30 AM. The ramp was in good shape and didn't have any problem with debris the whole trip.
We went to our favorite rig (favorite because we've always had good luck there) in about 125' of water. Trolled around the rig with a speck rigs hoping for Kings, Spanish, hardtails or some other baitfish. Picked up a hardtail and a houndfish right away. I hooked the houndfish for bait and retrolled the area. We all saw a 15 pound dolphin pick up the houndfish! She mouthed it and jumped out of the water but wouldn't take the single hook. Frustrating but still cool.
After a few more passes without any more luck we tied up and begun bottom fishing with squid and cigar minnows (frozen). We also put out a drift line and another line about 30 - 40 feet deep. To make a long story short, we ended up with two SMOKER Kings, over 40 pounds, one 20 pound King, 2 Bonitos, 8 red snapper (19 - 24"), about 15 Lane Snapper and a dozen Vermillion Snapper.
On the way in we saw a sight I've never quite seen. Although I've seen Kings skyrocket straight-up, this one jumped from one side of a baitpod to the other side in a huge rainbow arc, 8 feet high! Wow!
As you can see, we had a great day besides the late start.
