Report: Hopped on the Brooklyn VI to get in on the Mackeral run. Surprisingly large crowd. Fishing wasn't that great. The conditions didn't help that much either. Fish were tight to the bottom of the water column. The macks were smallish too. It was easier to catch herring and we moved once or twice to get off them. You had to work for your Mackeral, usually pulling up one or maybe two at a time. Also the endangered Dogfish were coming up at a steady pace. To catch this "rare and important" species, you just had to leave you tackle on the bottom without working it. I can't imagine what this is doing to the Sea Bass fishing. Once the rain started and the wind picked up, you had difficulty holding bottom with 16 oz. Saw the Dauntless, Suzie Girl, and Miss Belmar Princess out there, so I suspect they had the same experience. Either this Mackeral run is ending or the draggers really did a number on them.
