    Report:
fished the port wall at morehead city on 6-21-07 from 8am until 2pm. conditions were ideal with a light ne wind and clear water. used gulp baits and minnows to fish for flounder. the two of us only caught 7 flounder and only 3 of those were keepers. we did get 3 almost simultaneous hits by what were likely king mackerel. we managed to hang one for about 5 minutes but it eventually cut through the mono leader. the flounder fishing has gotten progressively worse at the port as well as other places that i fish for them the past 3 years. later in the day i ran into an enforcement officer from the dmf. i remarked that the flounder fishing is currently the poorest of my lifetime and i'm 56 years old. he agreed that it was indeed poor but didn't seem particularly concerned by it, saying that we should just give up on flounder and start fishing for other species. he mentioned spanish and dolphin as two species that are doing well but my boat is too small to seriously pursue those. i always thought that dmf had a management plan for flounder that included more that hoping for a comeback and targeting other species in the interum, but apparently i was wrong.
