Report: Shake-down cruise for the first time in 2 years. Our boat didn't want to get up to speed, balked and refused twice, although lower speeds were fine. We anchored off Cow and Calf at high tide, just to see if there were any blackfish, knowing that was the wrong place at the wrong time of year...tiger flies all over the boat, biting at our ankles etc., drawing blood, which wasn't pleasant at all, especially given the humidity and heat and constant rolling in the waves.
A word about speed-we witnessed a double hull cigarette boat hit the Cow at top speed right in front of us. Perhaps going slow is a good thing, gives you time to look around and think about maybe going outside that red can instead of inside it. Then you can hang on to your prop and steering a little longer, and not endanger fellow boaters with your flying bits of metal.
I'm sure I wish the cigarette fellow well, not ill, but dang those things are obnoxious. Won't find me speeding around LI sound at 60 mph, or 15 mph for that matter.
Good fishing to all.
