Water Temperature: 81.5 Water Clarity: clear down to 30 feet Seas: 2 - 4 ft Weather: Beautiful. There was a high pressure area holding right off the coast of VA Beach. Fishing_for: tuna Boat: Sugar Cookie captain: Loring Safford
Report: We left Lynnhaven Inlet about 6:30 A.M. headed out to the Norfolk Canyon Bight (about 82.5 miles according to my GPS). Sea conditions were great. We had a comfortable ride out while maintaining 26 - 28 mph.
We trolled frozen ballyhoo on Sea Witch ballyhoo trolling rigs. We had at least 5 hook ups during the day and didn't get any to the boat. Two of our hook ups broke the line (above the leader). We were using 50 lb test mono with 100 lb test leaders on Penn 50T's with tuna sticks. I think it was a combination of being to aggressive with the drag, not letting the fish run after it has hooked up, and not slowing the boat down enough. My friend's wife fought one of our hookups for 10 - 15 minutes before the line snapped. I would estimate that fish had to have been 200+ lbs. She might as well have been hooked to a car bumper.
The color combination that got the hits was blue and white. We varied our trolling speed between 8.5 and 10 mph. 9.2 - 9.6 mph seemed to be the sweet spot for hookups.
