Report:
Decided to cash in on those Montauk porgies that I had read About. My brother and I took a trip on the Viking Starship. Had about 55-60 people on the trip. Talked to some customers who had gone out the day before. They said that they did well with keeper porgies which in New York State is 10 1/2 inches. The boat left ar 5AM and fishing commenced in the dark. The porgies caught before sunrise were jumbos. once daylight occurred the smaller pogies took over. We had a good steady bite for almost two hours of mixed size fish. Then the blue fish schools appeared and we were forced to move. The middle of the AM to early PM was a slow pick. Once the tide change occurred, the bite became steady again. The captain stayed out an extra 1 1/2 hours. My brother and I caught over 90 porgies / sea bass each. However, only 60 were legal fish. The majority of the porgies were between 81/2 - 9 1/2 inches. Most customers threw back the undersized fish but there always some that keep everything. The boat provides claim bait. We brought are own claims and squid. we dyed our claims yellow and added ultra claim scent. The sea bass and larger porgies preferred squid. Most fishing occurred in 50-60ft. Medium to heavy rackle is needed because of the current and you don't know what you will encounter. Many bluefish were landed along witha 20lb+ striper. Twenty pound mono was sufficient. We used #1 hooks and sinkers in 5 - 8oz range. Based upon the number of fish caught it seems that the porgy population is in good shape. Next years increased porgy restrictions seems unwarranted.
