Two day report
Monday, Dec. 31st: Fishing with my Dad this trip. Low water temp this morning had me worried. No visible baitfish or shrimp on the surface. Caught a few 12" mullet in creek for cutbait. Southeast wind 10-15. Had trouble staying on jetti. Worked doa's as best as possible. One hit on float rig. Dad tried a piece of cutbait off the rocks and was on a nice 2.5lb trout fairly quick. Next cast had another trout as soon as it hit bottom. I noticed he was having more trouble with this fish and when it came to boatside I could see why: what a trout! Measured 25.5" and fat as a hog. That's when I made a big mistake. I decided to repossition the boat as we were having trouble getting to the spot with the wind and tide working against the anchors. Dumb, Dumb thing to do as we didn't get another bite. I think I moved the school. Big trout are skittish. Moved a couple more time tring to relocate the fish but to no avail. Wind incresed and waves did also. Decide to troll our hotspot in the intracoastal on the run in. Saw a few pelicans diving on bait along the oyster washes. Was able to catch a couple dozen fingerlings with castnet and was wishing we had them earlier at the rocks. No trout at hotspot. Loaded boat and went for grub.....
Tuesday Jan. 1st: Happy New Year, Great conditions to start the day. No wind. Ran to where the birds were working yesterday for bait. The birds were there, waiting. No mullet as the water temp was back down. Wind picking up from the NW on run to rocks. To rough for me on the North jetti. Tried the inside on the South but could not pick up a gamefish. Moved to the North against better judgement as a friend reported 2 reds and a black drum caught on prefrozen shrimp. Wind still increasing and we are having second thoughts with whitecaps visible in the near ocean. Made the decision the call it quits after a while with no action. Trolled our hotspot on the way back. Nothing, Think maybe it's over here for the season as most trout are moving to the winter pattern with all the fronts that have come thru.
May try it again if we get a week of stable weather. I think catchable fish are still there and hungry, getting the bait to them is a different story. Keep those rods bent...
