Report:
Large weekend crowd (80= people). Wind was higher that had been forcast. Fished the Mudhole area (125' to 230'). Most of the morning only able to locate schools of tinker mackeral. In the PM the captain was able to locate schools of decent size mackeral. The mackeral were scattered at various depths. The smaller mackeral were at 30'-75' feet and the larger mackeral were at 150'-230'. With the stiff breeze, you needed 10oz - 120z sinkers to fish efficiently. You need stout tackle as long as the mackeral remain deep. I caught 65 mackeral but only 30 were of the medium to large variety. A big help to me was my line-counter reel. I was able quickly adjust to the depths that the captain was calling out as the fish passed under the boat. Highlight of the day was a small boy landing a 25+ lb striper. If you are going mackeral fishing leave the braid at home. Still, a nice day on the water.
