Report:
The boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association are finding feisty bluefish ranging from 3-12 pounds. These fish are being caught on metal lures, bait strips, and clams meant for bass or drumfish. Captain Carl Sheppard of the “Starfish” found bigger blues to 12-pounds, or “gorillas” as he calls them. He also reports small striped bass along with a few black drum. The “Starfish,” licensed for 20 passengers, received a perfect score on its Coast Guard inspection. Captain Fran Verdi on the “Drop Off” has been working hard to get through the bluefish to the stripers. He duplicated last week’s catch of a black drum, landing a 33-pounder this weak. He reports the water temperature in Great Bay at 57-degrees. The fishing offshore of Oregon Inlet in North Carolina has just improved dramatically. Captain Lindsay Fuller on the “June Bug” will be staying there for another couple of weeks. The catches include lots of nice yellowfin tuna, big mahi-mahi, and even some wahoo. Captain Adam Novalsky of the “Karen Ann II” finished off the spring tautog season with limit catches. His last bottom trip to 100-feet of water resulted in a catch of sea bass, ling and pout. He has also been finding plenty of bluefish in Great Bay. Information on the association can be found at www.BHCFA.com
