Report: At approximately 4:30 PM I was called out of the water by the Park Service. They informed me that NPS Resource Managered had closed all access to the point to set up a buffer area for nesting terns. The NPS said they expect the closure to be in place until August.
The interesting thing about this is that the birds set-up their nest while off road vehicles were coming and going to the point and it didn't seem to bother them. Also I find it peculiar that the buffer zone that was established by the NPS is a larger rather narrow rectangle that extends from the nesting area to the water line. IMHO a true buffer would have been circular. Also I think that the NPS could have shown a little sensitivity to the fishermen and allowed a very narrow access strip near the high tide line.
Fishermen will only have a voice it in matters like this if we take the time to speak out as individuals and as a group. Contact the NPS at http://www.nps.gov/SER/sendmail.htm?o=82%2833NJ%2B%3AH%3BJ%3BJ1ZN%5B1ZDHV%3A35IP2L8%2E%29%0A&r=/caha/contacts.htm and let them know how you feel about them closing all access to one of the best fishing spots in the world.
Also remember Toyota is a proud sponsor of the Audubon Society --- the people that spearheaded the suit to close human access to the National Sea Shore!
