Report:
The Fin Fun crew set out to catch some stripers on Sunday despite a questionable weather report. The ocean was flat with a slight chop when we broke the inlet. We went into bait snagging mode immediately and filled the live well with enough for a half day of fishing. Things were slow from what we heard and that was correct. Not wishing to waste all day looking for the right bunker school, we headed to one of our favorite rocky spots off Elberon. On our first drift, with no marks on the machine, my mother-in-law's bunker fished deep, got whacked. There was no stopping this 85 year old lady from bringing in her striper. She had it boatside in short order and I leadered it while my brother-in-law slipped the net under the 29 lb. fish. That was the only striper we caught.
Later we moved to Shrewbury Rocks which was void of boats and action. My wife did have a striper come up and attack her bunker almost at the transom. She was so startled that she pulled the bait right out of the fish's mouth. We moved around to several spots on the rocks and saw a small thresher which immediately disappeared. At the change of tide, a blitz of small bluefish attracted two party boats from N.Y. At that point, the wind switched out of the SE and we headed for Manasquan. The radar pinpointed a storm over the inlet so we backed off and waited until it passed.
Our total was one striper, and a few small blues. It was a nice day on the water and this was another forcast the NOAA people blew.
