Report: Recent reports from Jones Beach Field 6, Sore Thumb and Democrat Point have been better in the past few days. Although it’s been ALL on bait, the always reliable 747S rig and a piece of fresh bunker has been the ticket for almost everyone one of the recent reports.
This past week we had two reports of fish at Democrat Point and two reports from Jones Beach Field 6. Sounds like Monday night saw some excellent fishing at Jones Beach Field 6, but further east near the old Field 9 used to be. At the shop, we weighed one 20 pounder and the reports we had were of fish from 26″ to 40″… all on the chunks. Sounds like the low water change has been the most productive on all the beaches… basically the end of the outgoing and the start of the incoming. Sounds like a heavy sweep in the surf too, so make sure to bring the big guns and plenty of lead!
Plug fishing has been practically non-existent, with only a few exceptions. Sounds like West End 2 at first light has been giving up a few small bass and a few Bluefish too. This is a typical mid-summer pattern for around here, but for the past few years it has been pretty reliable deal. Plastic swim baits, Bombers and Metal Lips are a good way to go while it’s still dark and once it gets just a little light out… Pencil Poppers, Little Neck Poppers, Surface Cruisers and even the Tsunami Poppers have been real good.
A few recent reports indicate that fishing the Jones Beach Piers and West End 2 in the evenings are yielding a TON of bait fish, especially wherever there are lights on. Small Butterfish, Sardines and Spearing are crowding into the lights and he’s been spotting a few Bass, Bluefish and even an occasional Weakfish crashing the pods of bait. They have been throwing the Super Spreader cast net on the bait and live lining them in the lights…. he’s had a few hooked up but has only landed a couple of Blues so far. Joe likes the light tackle but he’s been getting spanked by the bigger Bass and Weakfish and breaking them off. He’s a determined individual and you watch… he’s going to bring a big Weakie to the scale any day now! He said a 4/0 or 5/0 Octopus Hook on a short Flourocarbon leader has been working well with the live bait!
Point Lookout and Long Beach and the eastern parts of Robert Moses are seeing a few fish on bunker but nothing to write home about.
Thats all we have for the surf reports. Check back at causewaybaitandtackle.com/reports.asp for more frequent updates. Good fishing to all.
