Report:
As of late, I have been fishing large live baits in the pursuit of a "double digit" fluke. Since I was unable to catch any peanuts this morning I opted to use live spots in their place. The spots or lafayettes as some people call them are approximately the same size as the peanut bunker and substituted nicely. We fished Ambrose Channel and the Reach Channel in the AM and spent the entire PM trip in Sandy Hook Channel. The fishing wasn't great as numerous shorts were boated, but keeper fluke were hard to come by. I caught 2 fluke in the AM with 1 being a keeper of 6.25 lbs. The afternoon trip produced just 2 fluke for me also. The first fluke was 18.5" long and with only a few keepers on board at the time, I was glad to get that. A short while later my next to last spot was inhaled by what would turn out to be the largest fluke that I ever caught. After a tug of war for what felt like an eternity I lead the fish to the waiting net. It was immediately evident that the fluke was well over 10 lbs. I weighed the fish at Julian's on the way home and received the official weight of 12.80 lbs. You may not catch many fish using these large live baits, but the fish that you do catch will almost always be keepers. Tight Lines! TINKNOCKER
