Water Temperature: 77 - 78 Water Clarity: 15 ft Seas: 3 - 5 ft Weather: It was overcast and foggy. The sun came out about 4:00 P.M. The fog gradually burned off as the day wore on. The temperature was comfortable - I'd say mid 60s when we headed out and high 70s - low 80s for the high. Fishing_for: Yellow and Blue fin tuna Boat: Sugar Cookie captain: Loring Safford
Report: We left the Indian River Inlet launch ramp at 7:15 A.M. It was a bit rough on the way out (3 - 5 ft seas). We headed to the tea cup (about 48 miles according to my GPS). We trolled ballyhoo on sea witch ballyhoo trolling rigs (blue and white) hoping for blue or yellow fin. We trolled 2 other spots (ham bone and chicken bone) south west of the tea cup. The only real action we got was about 10:30 A.M. when we saw one of those orange plastic road construction barrels floating on the water. It was flattened out, floating along, and we could see several fins breaking the surface all around it. We trolled by it and 3 lines went off. Since there were only 3 of us on board, I had to grab a rod and help clear lines so, I didn't have a chance to punch the MOB button on my GPS. By the time we got the 3 fish in the boat we lost the floating barrel. Otherwise, we probably could have filled the boat with bailer dolphin. We only caught 1 other fish (a bailer dolphin) the rest of the day. Late in the afternoon we chunked at the chicken bone about 100 yards off the port side of MR Ducks. We watched through binoculars as a guy fought a fish for about 30 minutes. The fish eventually got off or the line broke. Whatever it was, it was something big. The seas really flattened out in the late afternoon and we comfortably cruised at 30 - 32 mph all the way in.
