STELLWAGEN BANK, MA- Cod & Haddock Fishing 4/25/2009

A decent weather pattern has continued the good cod fishing in the shoal water drifting and jigging the 120 to 150 ft depths for medium-sized cod the past two weekends. The haddock fishing on the eastern edge using “Jersey Clams” has been steadily improving. After the cod bite slows, a move to the east has been producing daily catches of between 30 and 60 haddock pleasing the traveling anglers from NY, NJ and CT.

Three of B-Fast’s cod vessels did well on the weekend of April 18th. Long-time clients Pete Dunn from NY and John Colson from NJ fished the DECISIVE and the FOUR-SONS. Pete’s Group opted for the shoal-water jigging, which yielded mostly medium cod. John group fishing with Capt. Bill stayed with the bait fishing for haddock in the deep-water. Fresh “Jersey Clams” were the ticket for nice size day-boat haddock. Antonio Garfanha’s group fished with Capt. Ted on the EASTERN VIKING. Opting to fish for haddock early then the shoals, which turned on later in the morning, the NJ anglers had a great mixed back of both haddock and cod.

B-Fast’s DECISIVE and FOUR SONS had a 50-50 mix of cod and haddock this past weekend with repeat-clients Chuck Garen from CT and Pat Lynch from NJ, respectively. The bait concentrations on the shoals were scattered making the jigging for cod more difficult than the past few weeks. However, the bait fishing for haddock just off the eastern edge filled the void as well as the coolers for Capt. Bill’s and Capt. Scott’s groups.

Hopefully this week’s SW wind weather pattern will hold and continue to bring summer-like weather and sea condition for our traveling cod fisherman.
