Report:
A great weather report and calm seas led to a mob scene up and down the coast. Our first stop was off Lake Como where we found some very active bunker schools. Once the boat traffic built up, the schools scattered and it was hard to even snag bait. There were a couple of sprays in the schools when a bass was hungry but that was not too often. Live bait, poppers, swimmers all went untouched.
The area around the Red Church was crowded with all sorts of anglers. There were boats fishing for fluke and sea bass as well as trollers, and bunker dunkers. It was too crowded for us so we left for the rocks. All that our live baits attracted were bluefish. Before we left, we gave the seabass a try. We caught them on AVA jigs and butterflies. Only about five were over the new minimum length. We saw no bait and no bass.
On our way back home, we tried our old numbers off Allenhurst and dropped the spoons in. We fished 300' of wire in 45' of water. Three fish found the lures and we boated two. The third was well into the backing and suddenly just came off. We only saw a few marks and then the SE wind kicked in and turned off the bite and we headed home. It had the makings of a good day in the A.M. but we just couldn't find any takers.
It pays to fish during the week or at least more than just one day a week. Worth noting is the fact that some big fish were taken close to Manasquan, not a lot but a couple of 45+ pounders. Also worth a special congratulations to Captain John Kolias on the Reel Fun out of Sea Bright (Mariners Marina)whose charter today took a very big fluke that was estimated at close to 10lbs. Official weight was not available since John was on the water when I talked to him. It should be on his web site soon. Way to go John!
