    Report:
Today we thought we might find the afternoon bite so we left the dock at 9 A.M. The bunkers were right in front of Pt. Pleasant and moving quickly. After making bait our choices were north or south. A friend who was fishing the "pipe" at Mantoloking since 4:30 A.M. did not even have a runoff. An outboard was coming past us and they pointed south but gave no specifics. The trip south would have meant us coming home into the N.E. slop so we looked north. We found the "pros" from the Benchmark and the Bounty Hunter on the rough bottom we usually fish but we didn't see any bent rods. There were some marks in the area but we didn't connect. The N.E. wind was making things a bit uncomfortable. We all were doing our best surfer stances trying to keep our balance with our feet wide apart. I think I was "goofy footed" once or twice. Since nothing else was happening, and we didn't want to troll, we opted for the seabass. Doug and I were using the Shimano Lucanus jigs with the extra long light tipped rods. My wife and my mother-in-law used squid and clams as we drifted over some high pieces. We all caught fish and put a good number of keepers on ice. Those funny looking Lucanus jigs really work. All you do is drop and slowly reel them up in the water column and then drop them down. There's no hook setting, the fish hook themselves as you reel. The long, light rods are the key. There was a very good spread of seabass and it's good that they have taken up residence inshore already. The sun finally came out as we got back to the dock. It was quite a change from the run north in the fog in the A.M. The only interesting thing we saw was off Avon where we spotted two pods of dolphins eating bunkers. These appeared to be the bottlenose, Flipper type, dolphins. Not a great day, but it was fun. Next week is another adventure.
