Report:
Spur-of-the-moment Saturday AM trip, hoping to get in on some of that jigging action that had been reported for the past week. The rental rods had jigs tied on, and the rest of us, with our own rods, were told to start with a jig. As we rode North, we paralled the beach. As we got further North, however, I noticed 2 things. 1st, the boat was angling off the beach. 2nd, the mates were busy preparing bunker chum. It looked like maybe we were headed for the Mud Dump, and probably anchor when we got there. So I moved my spot from the side to the stern. We did anchor at the Mud Dump. On the 1st drop, most everyone jigged, then one-by-one, switched to bait. There was no current, and the baits went to the bottom where Sea Bass were waiting. I caught 3 Sea bass, 0 keepers, after switching from jigging. Then when we picked up the anchor, and after checking out the area, dropped in a new spot probably no more than 500 yards from the original spot. 2 more Sea Bass for me, then someone hooked a Bluefish on a bunker chunk. Now the current was starting to run, so I removed my rubber-core sinker, and fed the bunker chunk off the stern. I had 4 hits, landing 3 bluefish, up to 28", using this method. The action could be described as a pick. A few on at one time, then nothing for a while. Eventually I moved to the side of the boat where I could throw metal, and I landed my 4th Bluefish on a Gator spoon just before quitting time.
