Report:
What a beautiful day (if you like sitting on the beach)! That was it. Bluebird skies, no visible bait, no splashes, no swirls, no fish! I started at Sandy Hook and walked to the Bug Light and fished from the end of fishermen's trail to the Bug Light and back. Nada! I didn't even see any bait.
A stop at Monmouth Beach and the same thing. I did talk to one fisherman who was lucky enough to tag four shorts all from the same spot on a small AVA with a tail. Monmouth Beach is a misnomer because there is no beach left! The ocean comes right up to the wall. As a matter of fact, if you haven't been to your favorite spots in awhile, you should check them out because they may not look the same. That's the way it was for me today. I learned a lot about what the storms left behind.
In Sea Girt, the public works department was plowing the boardwalk. In some places along the coast, the old jetties that were covered by sand before, are starting to show themselves. I got all the way to Mantoloking before I saw any bait in the wash. Terns were diving on small sand eels along the whole stretch but nothing was on them. There is a huge trough that runs the length of the beach for quite some distance. Getting to the outer bar is impossible where I was.
Steely might be able to fill us in on what it looks like a bit farther down in Ocean County. Once the bass and blues get inside the outer bar, this looks like a good stretch especially at high tide.
That's it for today. The ocean was like a lake. In fact, I saw a pontoon boat off Mantoloking. Better days are coming when the bait gets into the surf again. Tight Lines.
