Report:
Not the best of conditions but fishable none the less. Turning the tip of the Hook was a little bumpy with an outgoing tide up against a brisk NW wind but once ocean side the ride was smooth. Spotted numerous areas of bird life about 1.5 miles off the beach and headed in that direction. A single rod with an umbrella was set out. As soon as we hooked up (which never took more than a minute or 2) the rest of us would send down tubeless A47s. My first drop yielded a keeper bass. Most of the time at least 2 of us were hooked up. It was a mixture of keeper bass, short bass and bluefish. At first all you had to was hit the bottom and begin a slow/medium retrieve and you were in. Later they wanted the jig bounced off the bottom. Played with the bass/blues for about 2 hours putting 11 bass to 35"s in the box (all bluefish were released). Found a nice piece of sticky bottom and begun to blackfish. Took about 20-30 minutes to build up some life but during the time period I dropped down a 1/2 green crab and had it smacked hard as soon as it hit bottom. I knew it wasn't a blackfish by the way it fought. At first I thought it might be a spiny dogfish but it really didn't fight like that either. Once we got color, a positive ID was made. A nice 33" striper which completed our 6 man limit(also assuring we wouldn't be doing any more jigging the rest of the day). A slow steady bite of blackfish started with fish ranging from shorts to #5. At first 1/2 a green crab was the hot bait, then 1/2 a white-legger then back to green. By the time the anchor was pulled we had achieved a boat limit of tog (several in the #8-9 class topped by an #11.40) to go along with a limit of bass.
