Report:
Our usual crew (including my 86 years young mother-in-law,my wife, son and brother-in-law) got out to the reef with hopes of catching a meal of seabass. There was very little drift early so we didn't anchor. We were able to fish straight up and down and broke out the Shimano Lucanus jigs with the new rods and reels which are made for that kind of fishing. While the bite was not great compared to other trips, we did okay with my 4lb. knobhead the biggest.
The seabass just absolutely gobbled the Lucanus jigs on the rough bottom areas. My son boxed a keeper cod as well. The light rods and the Lucanus system were very sporting and effective. My wife outfished everyone. She learned how to use the jigs well and had the right touch. I can't say enough about the Lucanus system because it really works and its fun. We got to use the rods, reels, and jigs because Doug is the Shimano rep.
On the way back in, we stopped on a few big schools of bunkers off Bay Head and Point Pleasant but there were no bass among them. There apparently was a very large bunch of bunkers off the Red Church so I'm guessing that the traditional June full moon striper bite at Monmouth Beach and the "rocks" will be right on track if that bait moves up there.
