06-24-10 JEKYLL & ST. SIMONS ISLANDS FISHING REPORTS By Captain Vernon Reynolds

This June will be recognized as on of the hottest ever. The first day of Summer was this week but temperatures have been running into the high 90’s with the heat index hovering around 105 the past couple of weeks. That said, the fish are enjoying the heat. Anglers are taking Trout, Spanish Mackerel, Tarpon, Redfish, Ladyfish, Bluefish, Whiting and Sharks inshore and near shore. Offshore Barracuda, King Mackerel, Spadefish and Cobia are being taken.

Speckled Sea Trout are spawning on area beaches. Trout move to beaches and sounds in preparation for the annual spawn which is protracted, running from May into September. Male and female Sea Trout spawn in shallow beach waters. The fertilized eggs then float inshore with the tides and currents until they settle in sandy bottom areas in area rivers and creeks.

Specks can be taken fishing area beaches during the spawn. Anchor the boat just outside the rollers. Cast a live bait or jig into the surf and slowly retrieve it. It takes a little concentration to recognize a strike with the surf pulling on your line, but soon you will be able to tell the difference.

Trout will not be the only thing you catch on the beach. Captain Eric Moody’s charter hooked a four foot Tarpon last week. It spooled the too small Trout outfit but it was an exciting few minutes. Ladyfish, Jacks, Bluefish and Sharks will also take interest in your bait.

Release all illegal and unwanted fish unharmed. This has always been important but not always practiced. With the oil spill in the Gulf it is more important than ever.

State waters opened to shrimping a couple of weeks ago and our Dolphin can often be found following the shrimp boats. Shrimp and baitfish fall out of the net and become easy pray for Dolphin and Sharks. We offer a hour and a half and a three hour Dolphin tour.
