Report:
Bruce, his dad, and I started our search near the TC buoy and then gradually into the Reach Channel picking up fish at each stop. Our most consistent pick was during three drifts along the shallower areas on the green side of the Reach. The entire fleet from the Highlands and Atlantic Highlands was in the area at one place or another. A large fleet also was seen in the back of the Reach closer to the N.Y. side. By day's end we had ten very fat 19-21 inch fish for dinner. As I said, it was a pick with small patches of fish here and there. We did better on the "flats" as compared to the channel. We also took a few keepers on the western edge of the "Knoll". My fish were equally caught on a chartreuse swimming mullet teaser and a squid strip on the bottom hook. The new penny shrimp did not get a touch.
While we were near the "Reach" and again near Chapel Hill we watched a sturgeon free jumping. It could have been more than one fish because we saw it in several spots during the morning. There was also some taylor bluefish action under birds for awhile. We also spotted a large turtle near Chapel Hill. The bunkers were away from the boat traffic in the middle of the bay.
It was work to catch what we did today but the keeper to throwback ratio was better than most days. We caught nothing very large but we did okay.
