Report:
Water temps were up in the bay and even higher in the river. At one point, the temp.gauge registered 76+. There was a fleet of party boats in the bay and many never left because there was no one in the ocean. We started at the top of the Reach and then went to Chapel Hill. It was a slow pick at both spots with crazy currents and wind. Nowhere did we ever find a spot when we were all onto fish at the same time.
A trip down the beach again found us with a confused drift, a few keepers, and some trash fish. On our way back we stopped on a piece of Flynn's Knoll and had a slow drift with a few more keepers. The three of us caught lots of fish but were only able to box 10 keepers. My fish were equally divided between the squid strip on the bottom hook and the Gulp teaser on the top. The biggest fish ate the teaser.
Down the beach we saw a very large body of bunkers which must have escaped the netters but one unlucky bunker fell prey to an osprey's talons as it was snatched off the surface and carried away for dinner. I again saw the sturgeon free jumping near Chapel Hill. One point of wonder was one of the fluke which had a few small sandeels in its stomach. Did this fish just come in from offshore a bit or are there sandeels in the bay? The rest of the fish had crabs or rainfish in them.
Cliff is right about the boat traffic. It was very heavy. I saw boats running parts of the river at full throttle in areas that were for restricted speed and no state police in sight! Tonight might be a mess.
