07-22-10 JEKYLL & ST. SIMONS ISLANDS FISHING REPORT By Captain Vernon Reynolds

Speckled Trout fishing has been a little slow this season but is improving. Larry James and a friend had a limit of fish including a 22 incher and another 19 inches this past Saturday fishing around Cumberland Island. Phil McDonald had a 19 inch Trout along with 12 other nice fish taken around St. Simons Sunday. Phil also had four Black Drum. Live shrimp and mud minnows were used as bait. There was a fish kill this past winter due to the low water temperatures and it was suspected the Trout fishing would be below average this year. Speckled Sea Trout are the most sought after sport fish in our area.

Captain Eric Moody caught two Bull Reds Friday while Shark and Tarpon fishing in St. Andrew Sound. Bull Reds move into near shore waters in the spring and fall. It is now believed that there is a group that remains through the Summer, moving up area rivers and taking up residence in the deep holes.

Shark fishing slowed with the New Moon tides last week but is getting better now that the tides have nipped back. Tiger, Hammerhead, Bull, Blacktip, Lemmon and Nurse are a few of the species that call the Golden Isles their home. We suggest catch and release for sharking, their numbers are declining.

Tarpon, the “Silver King”, have arrived. These big fish, some over 200 pounds in our area and 350 further south, show up every year in June. Tarpon feed on the same pray as Sharks and work the same waters. It is not unusual to catch a shark on one cast and a Tarpon on the next. Tarpon have no food value for humans and should be released unharmed, although most anglers take a scale tor a trophy. Offshore fishing for King Mackerel and Barracuda remains slow. No one knows for sure, but many anglers believe it is the heat.

Remember to take plenty of water along when you go out on the water and watch your passengers closely for heat exposure.
