Report:
This late report covers two days of fishing this weekend (Sat/Sun). The Saturday trip was out of Long Branch(Shrewsbury River)on the CinSan 31'HydroSport for fluke. The area near the "needles" which was productive last week still held some fluke but as the current increased, the action slowed. We moved to the green side of the Sandy Hook Channel in the shallow area starting at 15'. This area had a good amount of fish which we had to pick through to find a few keepers. I managed a double header on the pink Gulp teaser and the small green plastic skirted squid strip on the bottom. A move in closer to the beach was not quite as productive but still provided some action. It wasn't a bad day as the three of us caught over 90 fish but we hardly had enough for a few fish sandwiches. We caught no bluefish, nor did we see any. That's amazing for this time of the year with so much bait around. I'm not complaining though.

Sunday's trip was on our Fin Fun with out regular crew plus two out of staters from New Hampshire. After having them register online so they could fish legally, we headed out to an area that produced some keeper fluke for a friend the day before. Good "intel" is very important and our friend did not disappoint us. We fished south of the SeaGirt reef "area" for the fluke which were there on a high spot. Short drifts were important and we did box six keepers up to 23" on pink Gulp teasers. I stuck to a 3oz. Spro which kept my rod bent for quite a few fish. There's something very special about jigging fluke in deep water! Once the tide changed and the wind fell off a bit the drift changed and we left for the reef. The seabass were waiting and we were able to drift without too many hangups and had great action with clam, squid and spearing baits. Compared to other weekends, the reef was empty.

What was not absent were the weekend watersport nuts who insist on riding double and triple on wave runners and racing out through the middle of the crowded inlet on a strong outgoing tide. Once again we had a wave runner dump its passengers into the middle of the inlet as an armada of boats was trying to negotiate the steep troughs created by the outgoing tide. Fortunately no one was hurt or worse but the boaters had their hands full in trying to avoid the people in the water and trying to keep their own boats under control. The Coast Guard did show up eventually to do safety checks of the boats but seemed to miss the knuckleheaded watersportsmen who almost caused a disaster.
