Report:
Received a call Friday morning from Capt. Allen asking if Jason & I were interested in doing some river fluking on Saturday. Since the forecast was less then desirable and with seas in the ocean running 5-7' on the conservative side I figured that would be the best best for the weekend.
Going in I knew that our chances of catching a keeper weren't high (although I've done river trips before and caught plenty of keepers) but I also knew there would be plenty of action. So I rigged up the light & ultra-light spinning gear.
Started off just west of the Rt 35 bridge. Jason started off using a 3/8 jighead tipped with a 4" GULP chartruese minnow. I opted for a 3/4 ounce white Spro tipped with a chartruese GULP with a standout hook 8"s above tipped with a 3" GULP new penny shrimp. Jason scored the first 3 fluke followed by Dave, his father & his son Nate who were using GULP ghost shrimps catching. I had 1 light bite with my set-up. Moved over east of the RR Bridge and started drifting from the Monument west. Picked a few over repeated drifts. Next moved to channel behind the Lobster Shanty & Wharfside. I started to out catch the others on the shrimp & Jason soon switched to a similar set-up on a trout rod that I had rigged with #4. He used this set-up the rest of the trip.
Moved back to the west side of the Rt. 35 Bridge and made numerous drifts anywhere from the bridge west towards the canal mouth. Some spots held fish and others didn't. For the boat we totaled 89 fluke (all shorts). Most in the 13-15". Some as small as 8" with the biggest going 17.5". Not as good as I've (we've) done in the past with overall numbers or size but still great fun on the appropriate sized scaled down tackle. In addition we had 1 very big star gazer & 2 sea robins. My total was 22 and Jason's was 15.
