Report: Jason, and I joined Capt. Frank, Dennis, Gary & his son Hunter for a day of bottom fishing. Started off on a rock pile west of Romer's light. Lots of action but unfortunately it was from 'pin' sea bass-although I was able to cull one 14"er out of the 19 caught in 30 minutes. Moved east to a piece between the channel & had the same.
Decision was made to run south to the Sandy Hook Reef. Fished the same spot was did last week. Once on anchor is lights out lock & load porgy jumbo fishing for 4+ hours. Baits were hit as they hit bottom, engage the reel, set the hook, fight fish & repeat. Numerous doubleheaders led by Hunter who easily had 15 doubles including a double of a jumbo porgy & #5 bluefish. To top of his day & to show us up he caught a 32" striper. Easily a 6 man limit of porgies. with the action & size, we decided to only keep 13" or over on the porgies, so we threw allot back. A few more keeper sea bass & a pair of tog rounded out the catch. I brought 102 fish over the rail..25 sea bass (1 keeper), 2 tog (1 keeper), and the rest porgies. Jason put 84 (maybe 6 sea bass, 4 of those being keepers) fish over the rail, losing a nice double of a #5 tog and jumbo porgy at boatside when his line parted.
Was amusing to watch other boats catching 1 to our 10. Guys on others boats literally stopped fishing and just watched us trying to figure out what we were doing. Key was to use small clam strips or a small piece of "the lip" of the clam and the type of rig we were using.
