This will be a 2 day report encompassing the final trip of 2011 and the first trip of 2012.
12/31/2011: We began the day jigging on readings between the channels. It was a tough bite at best with only short bass to show for our efforts. Later in the morning, Rob decided to head south to a small piece of bottom at the Shrewsbury Rocks that has been harbouring cod. The initial drift produced what we came for as the cod responded to the jigs. The cod bite was short lived, but not before the damage was done & 17 codfish were lying on the deck. We headed back up to the area between the channels where they had a good afternoon bite the day before and were greeted with diving birds. Three keeper bass and numerous shorts provide a great ending to the trip as we left the fish biting. I managed 9 short bass and a nice cod for the trip.
01/01/2012: This morning we returned to between the channels where we left the bass biting yesterday. The birds were there, but sitting on the water. Knowing that the area held bass, Rob starting searching for readings. We started picking short bass and decided to wait them out until it happened mid-morning. The bite grew stronger as the tide increased in velocity and the birds started working over the fish. Granted, the overall majority were shorts with three being keepers, but for this late in the season it's all a bonus. Now for the strange part. It's January first and the bluefish are still in residence. While not as plentiful as last month they are still here as close to a dozen were caught. Today I caught 18 bass, all shorts, and 2 bluefish.
The weather this weekend was stellar for this time of year and the fishing wasn't to shabby either. Happy New Year and Tight Lines!!! TINKNOCKER
