SUBJECT: # 39742: Pesca Panama trip

Submitted by Capt. Ken Roy Tale Spinner Charters from FLORIDA on 7/25/2006 2:10:00 PM

Last week, I joined 11 Okies in Panama City, (Republic of Panama) for one helluva fishing trip. We fished 5 days aboard 27'Ocean Masters, 3 anglers per boat.

Wahoo were too darn plentiful and made pests of themselves when we tried to catch Bonita for bait or Tuna for the box. They even horned in on Snapper fishing. Some of them weighed 70# or so. We caught 14 on our boat the first afternoon.

We fished poppers on top for Cubera Snapper and YF Tuna but caught a lot of other species in the process. If you've never seen a 40-50# Cubera blast a popper, you can't imagine the explosion. These fish sometimes come up from 100 feet to eat the popper. I'd caught some big Yellowfins on poppers in the past but I darn sure wasn't ready for the Cubera.

Fishing surface poppers was just too darn tiring for me so I teamed up with a couple of other tired guys and bottom fished and jigged for Cuberas and other Snapper. Huge Cudas were a problem as were Amberjacks and Wahoo.

My jigging spoons kicked butt.

Three Marlin were hooked although we weren't targeting them. One in the 250-300# class was taggged and released. We saw several other Marlin free jumping along with one Sailfish that jumped repeatedly for several minutes.

The food on the boat was fantastic and the accomodations aboard were great.

We met at the Veneto Hotel in Panama City and spent our last night there before departing for Florida and Oklahoma. The Veneto is great with a big casino.

Panamanian Beer is about as good as beer gets and the sausage they make down there is the best ever. Fresh pineapple every morning and again at lunch could get to be addictive.

I didn't mention the beautiful women in the casino. I didn't say hookers nor did I mention the whorehouse next door to the Veneto.

Pesca Panama is a class act, just maybe the best charter service around. Fantastic tackle, great boats, and experienced captains and mates.

The guys I fished with are all good folks. All in all, an incredible trip. I darn near cried when our time was up. I caught my only Roosterfish in the last few minutes of the last day and caught a Bluefin Trevally of about 20#s on my last cast.

Figure close to $3000/person/week including tips and contingencies. Not terrible for the trip of a lifetime.

Panama is close to the peak fishing season. Now that is December we are experiencing some strong north winds that will blow off all the warm water from the Pacific Ocean. Places like Piñas Bay, the Pedasi Area, the Gulf of Montijo and the Gulf of Chiriqui will get packed with the big ones. Anywhere in between Dec and March is when the Humboldt current strikes as well bringing all types of nutrient rich particles in its cold waters. We are looking forward to assist you on any fishing, diving or cruising need here in Panama. To learn more log in to our www.panamacruise.com.pa
