We'll be in the Beaufort/Hunting Island SC area around Christmas and are wondering where/what to fish for: from piers or in surf or do we HAVE to get a guide and boat? Would love to catch anything good to eat. Thanks for all the great advice here.

I love that area, haven't been there in a couple of years and can't wait to get back, my fav is summer for tarpon, my best is about 90 and it was AWESOME:)
There's trout and redfish inshore, and if you got deep there's no telling what you might come across.
Here's a couple of websites to help ya,
fishcraze.com, check forum/east coast

the sheepshead might still be there, their hard to catch but fun and great eating. Fish with fiddler crabs like you would wormfishing for bass.
Secret Got hit'em right before they bite :)
