what species is the fish most Gulf fishermen call a white snapper? I think it must be some kind of porgy.
Thanks

Spooled Again from TX says Not shure Bill but.....
over here around the Galveston Bay complex of the upper Texas coast, many ole salts refer to the sheephead as either a "Bay Snapper" or "Gridleak Snapper."
SA
Not sure if that helps but what the heck anyhow?

FreeOnBoard from TX says Local slang varies, but here's a list
http://www.intencorp.com/karmilow/kenneth/local_fish.html This list shows that name being linked to both whitebone porgy and gray snapper. Around Port Aransas, I've heard the name "white snapper" used occasionally and more often, "gray snapper" (both usually preceded by the "f--" adjective), when the triggerfish are so thick that you can't get a baited rig all the way to the bottom to catch red snapper. If you go to this site http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/SpeciesSummary.php?id=1225 for whitebone porgy and look at the enlarged map of relative likelihood of occurrence, you'll see that drop-off in the LA-MS-AL area which makes me guess that in your area, it's more likely to mean gray snapper.
