SUBJECT: # 40007: Anchoring Help.

Submitted by Big d (24.183.217.21) from ALABAMA on 6/5/2008 8:06:00 PM

I am new to offshore fishing and I am having a real problem getting my boat to end up on top of the reef after finding it. When I drop anchor I always end up having to pull up and try several times to hit the spot, I really need to anchor, fishing with the family and all, just holding the boat on the spot and letting them drop down is really not an option for us. Thanks for any help you guys can give.

and be sure you have the correct lat/longs, the best way is when you see it on the depth finder save it on your GPS. But when you do see it on the finder, drop a marker, a weighted gal jug will work fine, with enough rope of course. Then let the boat drift away maybe 50 yards. Turn and go straight to the marker, watching your compass, go past it a good ways staying on course with the compass and lower the anchor and let out the rope till you are next to the marker. It still sometimes takes a couple tries though. When the tide turns you will need to do it again.

    Good luck,

    Gene
