SUBJECT: # 40021: 1998 Johnson Ocean Runner 175hp - buy it?

Submitted by Eldon (70.89.131.169) from WASHINGTON on 7/18/2008 6:33:00 PM

I'm looking at a boat that has a 175hp 1998 Johnson Ocean Runner on it. I searched a little on the internet and I found quite a few bad comments about these engines. But, I recognize some people have bad experiences with any model of engine. So I thought I would ask here - where I've found the best info regarding outboards in the past. What do you think? Would you recommend buying this engine or not? And why? If it matters, I've always been the type to do his own maintenance on my outboards. But I've only had older, simpler engines before.

Thanks!
Eldon

I have not put it on the boat yet, I am in the middle of re doing the transom. I have heard that it is one of the better motors, but like you I have heard others that say the opposite. ?? Make sure its carbed. I paid 2800 for mine.

Post this on Boats and Motors, you will get more hits, this board is wayyy slow.

(same motor) and only problem I've had is blowing out the VRO pump last year. Other than that, it runs strong and parts are readily available and less expensive than most others.

Aint cheap to run tho. I get a 1.5 miles to the gallon at cruise.
