SUBJECT: # 40027: Penn 45GLS Drag Sticking

I have 2 penn 45gls reels and on the initial pull the drag is sticking. Once the line starts pulling off the reel (after the iniital sticking) it flows freely. The reels both reel nicely and I have taken apart everything and cleaned thouroughly. All bearings seem fine. Only thing I did not do was lube the drag washers. Being penn 45gls reels the drag configuration is a little different than I am used to seeing so I am not sure if that is my problem and if so which drag washers need to be lubed (seem to be on both sides of reel) and what to use.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Bill, I've had a GLS45 that I have maintained for at least 10 years, with a yearly teardown - Penn recommends keeping the drags dry, which I do, although some people always use Shimano drag grease on Penn reels. They have a single large drag washer, and if your drag is physically OK, and the drag plate is mirror smooth, then I'd guess you may have assembled the spring order wrong - one goes inside the spool, one outside the spool, best bet would be to tear it down and check it against the parts diagram. The other possibility is on the spool shaft, opposite the reel handle, there are 7-8 washers, and if you didn't assemble them correctly, or left a couple out, that would affect the drag.
