SUBJECT: # 9223: Sandy Hook Surf Fishing

I am heading to Sand Hook, NJ this weekend fr some surf fishing. What is biting? What should i use for bait? Where should I fish. I have much surf fishing experience so you may be blunt with your responses. I know how to produce bluefish as i have fished from the surf numerous times in the OBX. I assume fluke can be landed using a squid/minnow combo. I noticed many mentions of killing and spearing. What are these? Any striper biting? Anyone with any info. please write back. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Fished Saturday, 7/16. Very overcast today with a ray or 2 brealing through the clouds every so often. The surf was as flat as I had ever seen until late in the afternon when the wind started picking up.The fluke and sea robins were hitting very well. We landed about 15 fluke and 10 robins between the 2 of us. 2 fluke reached almost 16.5" but came up just short. The others all averaged around 13 or 14 inches if i had to guess. Fished primarily with killies / squid combos on fluke rigs with slow retreive. The sea robins were hitting the killies / squid combos just as well as the fluke. Those robins are a fun fight if you hook onto a decent size one. Anyway, this was my first time at Sandy Hook and I will be returning. Hope to catch some bigger fluke for the dinner table the next time i go. A good day though!
