SUBJECT: # 9313: Surf fishing Outer Banks, NC

Submitted by Bob Stine from AL on 10/19/2007 11:25:00 PM

Going over to visit Sister in Duck NC and thought I would try to surf fish a little. Any suggestions about bait and terminal gear? I bought a Shimano 400 Calcutta and put 30lb. braid ,300yds,on it and was going to buy a casting rod but now I'm wondering if a baitcaster is a good idea for surf fishing. I have an old but unused Mitchell 307 reel nd 81/2 foot Lews Speed Stick that I'm also taking. It has 20lb Mono in it. I won't surf cast again so I was planning on moderately priced rod. Any suggestions? Should I go with the bait cater or the spinning reel? ANY responce would help!

For October the spinning rod will probably work most of the time. The Calcutta 400 is a great surf reel and if you like using it an inexpensive rod might just be the ticket to let you handle bigger weights then the spinning rod.
