SUBJECT: Ford Escape Hybrid 4x4 on the beach??

Guys, I've always had a jeep (Wranger or Cherokee) and never gotten stuck in the sand even in the most difficult of situations. It's time for a new SUV and I'd like to get better gas mileage then 15-20 that the Grand Cherokee gets. The Ford Escape 4x4 gets 29 mpg in the city but do any of you know how it performs in the sand? Have you ever seen one on the beach? Does it matter what kind of vehicle it is if it's a 4x4? Thanks for all of your help.
