SUBJECT: Surf Fishing equipment and bait

I recently went to Melbourne beach and saw a guy catch a few pompanos with the three rods he had casted. I grew interest and now I want to get into it. There are sooo many different Surf Rods and Reels and I have very little knowledge to determine which one is good for me. I don't like buying too cheap so then a few months later I need to buy twice. What would be a nice starting gear? Thanks
