SUBJECT: # 3569: Gimmme some feedback on the Gold Cup surf rods please....

Submitted by Jamie (209.214.52.54) from ALABAMA on 4/6/1999 1:47:00 PM

I was considering purchasing a Gold Cup 8'6" surf rod. There are several on E Bay to bid on. however, I have never used one - I have always had my surf reels on "cheapies" (WalMart brand, etc.) What do they normally retail for? Any info whether pro or con is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If that is the daiwa rod , then it is garbadge. If you must go with a store baught rod either go with a st. croix , Gloomis or lamiglas.I would stay away from any other store baught brand.

I have a 12' Gold Cup Glass Surf Rod. Great for throwing chunks. Lots of Back Bone but too heavy for plugging. I imagine the 8'6" will be heavy as well. For plugging I use a 10' Spinfisher Graphite and a 8'6" 2 pcs Graphite I just got. Haven't used it yet.

    Happy Hook-Ups

there are some great deals on ebay. one of my favorite things to do is watch the idiots pay more for a used rod or reel than they cost new. I have seen that several times. Its pretty funny, know what you want to pay and go no higher dont get caught up in the competition.

I like the rods Bill mentioned I have at least one of each they cost from 120 to 250. The St Croix 8 foot one piece is a nice rod about 140$

As per the seller "it says model 700 on it". Sounds like the guy really doesn't know what he has there and you might be able to get it at a good price. One bid right now of $10, they are on $1 increments. I don't know what the seller's reserve price is, however, except that according to ebay the $10 bid hasn't met it.

As far as the Gold Cup rod goes, it is probably a worthwhile buy in the $50 range. I don't have an issue of Offshore in my desk at work, but they probably go for around $90 or $100 new. Anything over $50 wouldn't be worth it, any warranty is probably gone and you don't know how it is used. It isn't the best performing rod by a long shot.

Personally, I would go with that 8'6" St. Croix Ben Doerr, shouldn't be all that much more than a Gold Cup new. Probably around $125. I think they rate it for 1/2 to 1-1/2 oz, it is a 2-piece rod and they make it in a casting model as well as spin.

Evening all, if the rods the "gold cup graphite surf rod" it retails in offsore angler for 79.99 (8'6" type)

Mark, what would the weight be on your rod ?? I'm looking for a 10' rod for bait chucking to match up with a 21.1 oz spinning reel. I'm trying not to spend over $100 on the rod and they seem decent in the picture -- michael

...the Diawa Sealine X Rod in 10 feet. Its under $100 and works well with 3-6 oz.

Oops, scrolled up one state too far. I discovered that it's shorter to hit the "o" key and scroll up from Ohio than to hit "n" and scroll down from Nebraska. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they had some in the impoundments there, wasn't there one close to 70 lbs taken from the Colorado River in Arizona a few years back? Be a real bummer if the next record was taken from fresh water, wouldn't it?

Things are off to a slow start hereabouts. Although I did see some bait in the water last night, scattering as my jig came by. Also was paid a visit by a seal. Kinda late in the year for the seals to be in Jones Inlet, water must still be pretty cold.

For Chunking (AKA Flag Pole Fishing), The Ugly Stick is both economical and tough. I have several from 10 - 12 feet( around $60-$70). I use graphite for plugging and some chunking. The 8'6" one I just bought is a Gold Cup Graphite. I will also use this one to reach pond trout when they go deep in the pond. (2oz weight, 6# test, 20# shock leader) The 10' Spinfisher Graphite also has enough back bone to toss a 5 or 6 oz weight. (but costs as much as 2+ ugly sticks)

    Happy Hook-Ups

  10. 4/7/1999 5:03:00 PM Submitted by Poppy (207.172.43.4) from VIRGINIA says Mike P, Landlocked Stripers...
Mike P; The surf water down here in the Delmarva is approaching 50 degrees. I noted that some of the data buoys off of NJ and NY are still registering mid 40's, but those are off shore buoys. The surf, inlet and backwaters should start warming up for all of you soon.

A friend of mine in NY years ago used to mention surf fishing either Jones Beach and/or Jones Inlet in the New York/Long Island area as I remember it...? But I do remember distinctly him saying that the place was dangerous. Not by surf fishing standards, rather, from a criminal element. If this is the same place be careful...

I never fancied the idea of pursuing fresh water Stripers–not that I have not tried–but to me, the Striper is the king of the sea for us surf rats here in the Northeastern US. I do read reports every now and then about huge landlocked Stripers caught in various reservoirs, lakes, and rivers throughout the country. In fact down here in Maryland I have heard about some 30 pounders caught in local lakes that are within a 45 minute drive of Washington DC. Also, there is a restaurant that I frequent on occasion, not to eat, but to fish the buildings rear deck for small Stripers at night. The restaurant is just outside the city limits of Washington DC and sits on the Potomac river. One night we must have caught about 100 of them on just about anything you could throw into the water. Now DC is something like 75 river miles up the Potomac river from the Chesapeake Bay. And the Potomac river at DC is 100% fresh (sweet) water and not too clean. Yet, on rare occasion the Stripers are here. Amazing, their range, endurance, and resiliency.

The east side of the inlet is in a state park, the lot is well patrolled at night and they now have an after-dark permit. The permit costs $15/year and is only available prior to May 1 and after Labor Dy, deliberately so to keep out the guys armed with a six-pack and an attitude. They can't buy the permit on the spur of the moment on Memorial Day with a view towards hosting an all-night keg party. And the hike out to the jetty can be a trek. The west side may have been a dive years ago, but Point Lookout now is a lot quieter. The high crime area closest to the inlet is Freeport, and the area on the bay isn't the area you have to worry about. We're a good 20 miles away from the City and as far as the City riff-raff goes, we may as well be on another planet. I wouldn't go so far as to leave a rod on top of a vehicle, but I've left them inside since I moved to this area and never had a problem. In that time my truck has been hit twice up at the Cape in the area of the Canal. And I have never even remotely felt personally threatened.
